Quick Tip: How to Choose Timeless Materials for Home Remodeling
Most of us can remember a bathroom with pink tile or a kitchen with avocado-colored appliances, but today when we encounter those in a home, we think “yuck” and that the house is crying for an update.
When you are planning a remodeling project, how do you safeguard that the choices you make today won’t be decorating faux pas a few years from now?
Here’s what our design expert Lorrie Hochuli says: “To make sure your house doesn’t go out of style in a few years, choose materials that aren’t trendy to create a classic design.” This includes selecting neutral tones for tile, cabinetry and flooring because these are the most difficult and expensive to change.
“For instance, we recommend using white porcelain subway tile in many kitchens and bathrooms. As tile goes, it is fairly inexpensive. It’s been around forever and will never go out of style,” says Lorrie. She notes that marble is another stone that is neutral and will create a classic – timeless – design to any home.
If you want to change the look of a room, do it with accessories, such as throw pillows, funky lamps or even a painted or wallpapered accent wall. “These touches can change the feeling of a room greatly without costing you a lot of money,” notes Lorrie, “and most important, they aren’t permanent. They can be changed fairly easily and as often as you’d like.”
