The remodeling process can cause you to feel a range of emotions that might make you feel like you're on a wild rollercoaster. With each new phase, you may feel the rising and dipping of excitement, worry, and exhilaration as your home begins to transform. If you're starting a new home remodel, the best thing you can do is prepare to know exactly what to do every step. Then, it's best to just buckle up and enjoy the ride! Let's look at the highs and lows of the remodeling rollercoaster of emotions.
The Design Phase
⬆️Emotion: Excitement 😀
You may initially feel a mix of emotions, but the prevailing emotion will be excited because you are finally doing it! You are finally taking a step to make your home the way you've always wanted it to be.
During the design phase, you can bring your big ideas to the table while our design team makes your dreams a reality. Together, we'll create a 3D rendering of your remodeling project, and you may feel every emotion from excitement to anxious and impatient. When you're in the design phase, it's important to remember that although a rendering has been created, this step in the remodeling process takes a long time as we work through the details of your project. We need these details to order the items with the longest lead time for your project to ensure a smooth-flowing project.
Bids, Contracts, and Scheduling
⬇️Emotion: A bit anguished 😧
There is usually a big dip in emotions during the contract phase. Your investment becomes real (and perhaps a bit overwhelming). Additionally, you usually must wait several weeks until we have the materials lined up for your project. Just know this is typically a low point.
Once your design is complete, we'll begin the secretarial work of writing up and signing contracts, creating a timeline of work, and ordering products and materials needed throughout your home remodeling project. As this phase gets underway, it may begin to feel very real, and you may feel a little anxious and overwhelmed, and it's completely normal to feel this way. During this step, we also create an electronic schedule of your project that you can access via our web portal. This facilitates all details of your project, so you are always informed.
Demolition and Rough Framing
⬆️Emotion: Happy 😀
After weeks (or months) of waiting, the day has arrived for us to start work on your project!
Emotions of excitement and hope fill the air as you anticipate that end date when your new home addition or remodeled space to be completed.
Now it's time to start deconstructing the space that's going to be updated. We'll remove drywall, old fixtures, appliances and outdated cabinetry, so we've got a blank slate. In some cases, new problems may be unveiled, and we'll have to reassess our plans to solve them. Some homeowners feel a lot of stress during this phase, but we're used to it. The best thing to do is trust us to handle it and remain confident that you chose us for a reason! We're skilled, knowledgeable, and have your best interest at heart.
Once demolition is complete, the framing process will begin. This is the first step in building your new space and where you can start to visualize your new space. Emotions continue to be high.
Rough In of Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC, and More
⬇️Emotion: A bit confused 😕
Once rough framing is complete, the next step is plumbing, electrical and HVAC work. This step is messy, and it will probably be challenging to see the progress that's being made. As a result, you may feel a bit confused about what headway is actually being made, but all of the trade contractors know what they're doing. Each item must be in place before we can insulate and build walls.
Drywall Installation & Sanding
⬇️Emotion: Begins with "What have I done??" and ends with relief 😮➡️😌
Once everything's in place that will go behind walls, we can install your drywall. The drywall installation phase is a low point for many homeowners. By this time, you've already spent weeks displaced from your home (or parts of your home), and now you see how messy construction can be. Be warned. After we've installed the drywall, there will be a lot of sanding, which causes dust. Some homeowners are caught off guard, but it's a necessary step to ensure that every seam is hidden and your walls come out smooth.
However painful this step may be, many homeowners rejoice once this phase is complete because they can see the space take shape. At this point, it's much easier to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and homeowners feel excited, relieved, and hopeful.
Painting, Cabinets and Flooring
⬆️Emotion: Cautiously optimistic 😊
Once the sanding is complete, we'll paint and wallpaper your walls and install your cabinets and flooring. Many homeowners enjoy this step since it's easy to see progress. Flooring installation may be a little messy, but it's easy to see your new space taking shape.
Finishing Touches & Completion
⬆️Emotion: Wildly excited … let's do this again! 😍
We've passed the final set of loop-de-loops and are accelerating toward the end. Then, it's time to install counters, backsplash, fixtures, and appliances (if applicable). These finishing touches make your new space look complete, and many homeowners feel emotions like delight, joy, and relief, especially since they're nearing the end of the ride.
And once you see your new space, you look back and think, "That wasn't so bad. Let's get in line to do it again!"
